Some time ago, I noticed a very odd thing. In the stats for www.rcpt.to, the search string statistics showed something very odd.
Keeping an idle eye on the search strings and referrers that bring people to your electronic expression of ego is a very important thing. Combine a strong sense of insecurity and personal worthlessness with overweening arrogance, strange a match as that may appear, and you are led to an unfortunate state of mind which results in various desperate pleas for attention in ways which don't actually require risky direct human contact.
Ahem.
In fact, now that I think of it, that is remarkably similar to the post-mortem psychological analysis of why the Big-Brother-like porn event failed miserably. (This is where I would normally say "but I digress," except that, just this once, I'm not).
The search string "saori nanami" has been making a regular appearance in the logs. I've put an occasionally surprising amount of sheer crap up on these pages, but those words didn't ring any bells with me.
It took a workmate to suggest that perhaps searching for those words myself would prove enlightening. Unfortunately for Iain, who is normally infallible when it comes to providing practical, blindingly obvious, and unspeakably self-evident advice, this only muddied the issue further, for Saori Nanami (or possibly Nanami Saori) is an Asian porn star, of clearly no small repute.
It suddenly occurs to me to wonder what Iain was thinking at about this time.
Tracing that back caused a fair bit of head-scratching (although it would have caused less so had I just looked through the logs to see where the hell the hits were going to, instead of approaching the problem as a purely intellectual exercise. I need a five year old child on secondment from primary school to point out the obvious to me). It turns out that the search engines are directing people to... the statistics pages that say that 'saori nanami' is a popular search string on this site.
Yes, yes. The obvious problem. Normally, in such a situation, intractable and suspicious, but in fact due to webalizer being a little fractious when it comes down to the letter of it's duties, not entirely surprising. All kinds of randomness seems to appear in the statistics. Go on - try it for yourself (the search, not webalizer).
This page is clearly not going to help things at all, but at least I now have the satisfaction of having some genuine, saori-nanami-related content to draw the searchers to. I rather expect that they must have been at least as puzzled as I at finding themselves there. But balance and trust in the net is restored. Seek and ye shall find.
